Property owners pay cold-water charges for the supply of water through the plumbing system to sinks and showers. Additionally, they are responsible for wastewater charges, covering the disposal and treatment of water from showers, toilets, and sinks before it is released into the ocean.
In certain service areas, property owners may receive separate bills for cold water and wastewater, while in other areas, these charges are included in real estate tax bills.
The cold-water and wastewater charges are fixed, calculated according to the house size, not based on usage like hot water and electricity. These charges are reviewed each year based on evaluation issued each January, available on My Account on our webpage.
In addition to a fixed rate, an estimate is calculated based on the property size in square meters. The bill is divided between nine due dates from February to October.
Both water and wastewater charges apply to Reykjavík, Akranes and Borgarbyggð.
Only water charges apply to Álftanes, Stykkishólmur, Grundarfjörður and Úthlíð.
Real estate owners pay for both cold water and wastewater. The charges are built on a fixed rate and square meter charges. The fixed rate is paid equally by everyone, regardless of the real estate size. However, the square meter charges are calculated by the size of the house, including garages in the square meter calculations.
The fixed rate is calculated each year for every land number. Garages on a separate number are excluded from the fixed rate if they are on the same land number.
All our information on the sizes of real estate come from the property register. Parking spaces in shared car parking garages are included in the square meters, 12,5 sqm for each space, even if they are not listed in the square meters at the property register. Garages are part of the calculations.
You do not need to notify us for the water and wastewater bills. They automatically update at the beginning of each month according to the property register.
Please note that you must notify us on a new user for electricity and hot water meters. This is done here.
The registered real estate owner is responsible for paying the charges. In certain areas, Veitur send the bill; in others they are included in the real estate tax bill.

The charges for water and wastewater are divided equally on nine months per year, from February to October. Therefore, in November, December, and January you will not receive a water and wastewater bills.
Each year, in the middle of January, the bill for that year is published on My Account. There, you can see the whole amount, how it will be divided onto a 9-month period and how it is calculated.
