Tips on electricity

Electricity can be dangerous to handle and it's important to do it right.

The kitchen

The kitchen is normally the site of a home where the most energy is used. Most kitchen appliances are electric, though some use gas stoves. We do, however, encourage people to use induction hob tables since they utilize energy well and heat up rapidly. There are many mays to ensure cost-effective energy efficiency in the kitchen. Here are some tips:

  • Let frozen food thaw in the refrigerator
  • It is important to have good ventilation at the back of refrigerators
  • Do not overfill the refrigerator - suitably full refrigerator uses the energy better
  • Check that the doors of the refrigerator are tight
  • Rinse scraps from dishes and select shorter washing programs or lower heat when using dishwashers
  • Don’t boil too much water for tea or coffee cup
  • Make coffee in a coffee machine and not the old-fashioned way
  • Keep fresh made coffee in a thermos
  • Use pots and pans with a flat bottom
  • Use the correct size of pots and pans compared to the size of the hobs
  • Use a lid on pots, otherwise you need three times more energy
  • Do not have too much water in the pot to boil, it is often enough to have 2 cm water level
  • You can turn the cooker off a few minutes before the food is ready
  • Grill requires much more energy than when frying in a pan

How much electricity does my refrigerator use?

A good way to measure the power consumption refrigerators and freezers.

In order to measure the energy use of refrigerators and freezers, we recommend reading the electricity meter before you go to bed, since there are no other devices running at night, and then again in the morning.

The energy use is then calculated accordingly:

Consumption per day = ((reading in the morning-reading the evening before) / (time between readings in hours)) * 24 hours.
