We'll let you know
Reading energy meters will soon be a thing of the past. We're replacing energy meters with new smart meters.
Meter replacements in Veitur's service area have begun and will continue until 2025. On the map further down the page, you can see when the meter replacement is scheduled for your area.
No, they fall under normal renewal and maintenance of utility systems.
Our representatives will visit you to replace the meters. They are marked with our logo and carry employee ID cards with photos. The visit is announced one week in advance.
Meters are located in the intake room and our representatives need good access to them. Hot water and electricity are turned off during the replacement, which usually takes about 30 minutes.
If you live in a apartment building we make sure to contact the house association contact to let us in, if you are not in an apartment building an adult must be home to let us access the meters. The visit takes about 30 minutes.
Usage varies between months, so it is normal for the bill amounts to fluctuate monthly, unlike the previous estimated amount.
It's normal for your bills to be higher in winter than in summer. After having a smart meter for two winters, you can see how usage increases as it gets colder and decreases again in the spring.
You can see all your bills and usage history on the My pages on Veitur's website.
With a smart meter, you pay for your actual usage each month instead of paying a flat rate based on a estimation plan. This also means no more settelment bills after meter readings.
The benefits of smart metering are diverse, benefiting customers, the utility company, resources, and the environment.
You can monitor your usage, giving you more control over your household's energy consumption, allowing you to use energy more efficiently. You pay for actual usage monthly and no longer receive reconciliation bills since meter readings are automatic.
Better usage visibility allows you to quickly respond to malfunctions or abnormal usage.
More information enables us to operate the utility systems more efficiently and promote better resource management.
The old meters contain metals and plastic that can be recycled. The Icelandic Recycling Company handles the recycling.
You can see your usage history, which includes monthly usage information, on the my page on Veitur's website. With the advent of smart meters, readings are more frequent, allowing access to usage information more often than monthly. Our meters are not yet operating on that system, but it is in testing.
The data shows how much electricity and/or hot water is used and when. The meter data does not indicate what kind of devices or technology the energy is used for, only how much is used and when.
Veitur has access to the meter data from your smart meter. The data is also sent to Netorka for electricity billing. Netorka is a shared database for utility companies.
The electromagnetic radiation from smart meters is far below the safety limits set by Icelandic and international authorities. Measurements have shown that the radiation is less than 1/1000th of the reference limits. The maximum transmission power of the meters is 0.5 watts. For comparison, a mobile phone can transmit up to 2.0 watts. More information is available from the Icelandic Radiation Safety Authority.

Replacement of meter
The P1 user port allows customers to receive real-time data from the smart meter. The data available includes power and delivery quality (voltage, frequency, etc.) and usage.
The user port is present on all electricity meters but needs to be activated.
Currently, only test access is available for those who request it for the electricity. This is a so-called beta version and is still in development. The arrangement and format of the data may change. Contact us here if you want to participate in testing the solution.
No, Veitur does not take responsibility for the use of the P1 user port. To use it, you need to acquire equipment from a third party.
The meters provide usage information every 15 minutes, which is electronically transmitted every hour.
They send information about the quality of electricity delivery, such as voltage, frequency, and other parameters.
The meters receive data from hot water and cold water meters, and they have equipment that can be used to turn devices like electric car chargers or water heaters on and off. Power can be disconnected without needing to visit the location when necessary. In case of unexpected power outages, alerts are sent to Veitur, which can improve response times
The meters send usage information every hour through the electricity meter, both in cubic meters (m3) and kilowatts (kWh).
Smart meters for cold water also send data through the electricity meter using wireless M-Bus technology, which collects wireless messages and sends them through the master (electricity meter) into the usage history.
Hot and cold water meters send data through the electricity meter using wireless M-Bus technology, which collects wireless messages and sends them through the master (electricity meter) into the usage history.
This solution is not yet in place, but we will inform you when it becomes available.
It will be activated through the P1 port on the electricity meter.
Here you can see how the visit works. We'll be stopping off for a short time so you don't have to offer us a coffee.
