Warm homes for decades to come

Drilling for hot water

Veitur takes a long-term view—spanning decades—when it comes to infrastructure development. To ensure a supply of hot water for future generations, we seek out new resources and reinforce existing geothermal areas.

On one hand, drilling takes place in known geothermal areas where production can be increased. On the other, new areas are explored in search of hot water that can enhance supply security and support the continued growth of communities.

Following each drilling operation, the results are evaluated. This assessment includes examining the water yield, the temperature, and the well's suitability for future production.

The overview below covers drilling sites that have obtained the necessary permits. Timelines are subject to change based on project progress and site-specific preparations.

Reykjavík
Geldinganes
Drilling is complete. The borehole yielded a small amount of hot water, and Veitur is now assessing whether it can be utilized for the district heating system. The results provide important information about the geothermal energy in the area and the nature of the resource beneath our feet.

Laugardalur
Drilling operations will take place at Engjateigur and Bolholt. Four boreholes will be drilled at Engjateigur during the winter of 2026–27. Work at Bolholt will begin in October 2026, with one borehole to be drilled there before the end of the year.

Ölfus
Bakki

Drilling is complete. The well is the third production well in the area, and initial results are promising.

Further information: New hole in Bakki in Ölfus.

Rangárþing ytra
Kaldárholt

Drilling of the production well has been completed, and the results are in line with expectations.

Further information: Successful hot water well in Kaldárholti.

Mosfellsbær
Skammidalur

Two production wells are being drilled in Skammadalur. Drilling is currently underway, and the results will be evaluated once it is completed.

Við Helgafellshverfi

Two production wells will be drilled above Úugata from the same drill pad. Preparations for the access road and the drill pad are currently underway. Drilling is scheduled to begin towards the end of October 2026 and continue until January 2027.

Helgadalur

Initial drilling is scheduled for 2027. The final sequence of operations, the number of wells, and the implementation details are currently being finalized.

Borgarbyggð
Borg á Mýrum

Plans are in place to drill an exploratory well. Drilling is scheduled to begin in early 2027. The final timing depends on permits, design, and the progress of other projects.

Akranes
Jaðarsbakkar

Plans are in place to drill an exploratory well at Jaðarsbakkar. Preparation of the drilling plan is in the final stages, and the design of electrical, water, and sewage connections is well advanced. Initial work on the site is expected to begin in October, with drilling scheduled to take place over the winter of 2026–27.
